R.I.P. Barry Lester (Auto Replicas) - Died 7th July 2010

Hand built and kits

Just as we sent out the August news letter we received confirmation from John Simons that the Ferrari 350P4 was on it way to us. This kit MM199 will build either the Chris Amon version as raced in the 1968 Tasman series, the sports cars ran in support races to the more famous open wheeler cars. The car was entered by Dave McKay’s Scudira Veloce team and although it did struggle against the larger engined Matich it managed a win at Longford (where the Matich didn’t run) and a second at Sandown Park.

The car was also ented at the Bathurst Easter meeting driven by Bill Brown where it won easily setting the fastest lap and was clocked at over 180mph on Conrod straight a record that stood for around 30 years. The car was then sold to Paul Hawkins to race in South Africa where he shared the drive at the Kyalami 9hr with John Love and took pole but finished 3rd In the 3hr races he won in Cape Town and Pietermaritzburg, came 2nd at Lourenco Marques and he won the 500kls race at East London.

This model is a very significant Aussie/Kiwi one and, although made before, it has never been made correctly as when the car raced in Australia it carried a spare wheel hooked on the rear.

Kit $80 or Built as any of the versions $250
