Coming from the northern hemisphere I knew little about Peter Brock until I arrived in Australia 4 years ago. To me the name Peter Brock was a guy that had won Bathurst a few times. Bathurst was not well known in the UK until the 1980’s also he co drove at Le Mans in 1984 with Larry Perkins and had a few not outstand outings in the European Touring car championship. In other word just another driver, in-fact Alan Moffat was far better know to me as he had won at Monza with co drive John Harvey in the Holden Commodore in 1987. There had been many Aussie drivers in Europe, F1 world champion Sir Jack Brabham and Alan Jones were of cause the better known ones.

But who was this Peter Brock, a legend in his own lifetime in Australia “An Aussie Icon” for those of you in the northern hemisphere he was to Australia what Sterling Moss is to the UK and what Mario Andretti is to the USA. Although retired he still drove in many events and it was at the Phillip Island Classic earlier this year that I had the pleasure of meeting him. He died competing in such an event, the Targa West held near Perth WA on 8th Sept. 2006

R.I.P. Peter Brock at least he went doing his thing, which is better than many of us can hope for.
